Powershift
Part 1: Josh’s Night off
Josh gently lay back on the bed letting his bruised body sink into the cool mattress. The Rikti and the Nemesis had taken their toll on him. Despite his now heavily pockmarked armour and the excellent Vanguard hospital teleport system he could still feel every hit upon him from the days battle.
He closed his eyes and let the sound of the base flow over him. The low crackle of magical energy that powered the building was occasionally interrupted by the odd voice of other group members as they passed the rest area discussing urgent matters; “Shadowe gone missing?”, “The mayors daughter had got herself kidnapped by the Circle of Thorns… again”, “You see that new hero in Atlas, talk about a revealing outfit, is she fighting crime in a strip club?”.
Josh thought about calling out, getting some company and playing on the injured warrior card, but he just couldn’t be bothered, he wanted to just sleep.
Josh’s thoughts moved back to his Sonia, his sister. The pressure of guilt tightened his chest, bile slid into his throat. He couldn’t stay in that flat with her any longer. Seeing what now possessed his sister, how it abused her body, and showed no trace of his sisters shy nature, or nervous humour. He had to move out, slum it in the base. And he couldn’t risk it reading his mind, it would kill him in a heartbeat.
Maybe he deserved to die, it was his fault. The thing in his head , the fire aspect of Riktau, gave him his powers and had promised that Sonia and it’s air aspect were imbalanced and for them to both survive would need to be fused correctly. It had lied. The air aspect of Riktau had taken full control, it did not sleep, it did not rest, in never let his sister through.
A few months ago he had confronted the thing in his sister’s body, demanding to know where his sister was.
“Screaming in the back of my mind”, it had replied.
At that moment his temper flared, but before he could act upon it he was slammed against the wall, bound by a force field, crying out as jagged pain ripped through his mind.
She approached, “You have a problem with that?” she smiled sweetly and leaned in, her lips close to his as she looked into his mind, “bad boy!”.
A sharp force field sliced its way through his shoulder, he tried to scream again but was silenced instantly as a field filled his mouth and throat blocking his airways. All his fight was lost.
Her glowing, unblinking eyes stared into his, “good boy”. She kissed his nose and lightly laughed then turned away dropping the fields.
Josh had fallen to the floor gasping for air.
Since then he had done his own thing, or so it had seemed. Typical self centred Josh, glory hungry Josh, show off Josh. He had his own reality show and his modelling was going well. Melissa was doing a fantastic job as his publicist and he was getting his face on more magazine covers and tv channels than ever before. He loved the attention and his plan was a good one, it would work one way or another, but people he cared about would be hurt and there would be a lot of death.
