There was a brief flash of steel in the gloom beneath the tavern table, followed by a faint ‘clink’ of coin hitting coin, as the shrouded figure meandered made it’s way through the common room. Dancing girls, tavern wenches, patrons and employees alike falling victim to the mysterious predator in their midst.
A few startled cries arose as some among the crowd noticed the absence of their purses and pouches which soon began to escalate into angry yells, curses and threats. Taking it’s lead from the mood of the room, the figure darted from the cover of the ale kegs and slipped neatly through the nearest window, a stray wisp of sea fog and a childish giggle serving as a calling card for it’s crime.
“Mathias! When did you get b- Ow!” squeaked the figure, a young gnome hanging by the ankle in the grip of a rough looking one-eyed sailor, as he was swung non-too gently against the wall
“I’ll ask the questions, and by Valkur you’ll answer honestly or I’ll toss you back in there. Now then, my coin bag is where?”
“Good, and what about my young lady friend here?” he ask, nodding to the young woman behind him.
“Here it is squire. Honest mistake, didn’t recognise you with the patch, last trip got a little rough eh? Yaargh!”
“I said I’d ask questions, you’d answer. Now then, would you prefer to spend the night in the cells of the watch, at the hands of those in there, or unconscious in this very alley?”
“Have mercy Mathias, I’d much prefe…” the rest cut off with a dull thud as the gnome plummeted head first into the ground.
“I’ve tried mercy, it’s soft and slimy. Very much like a gnome thief dropped from height onto a hard surface.” mocked the sailor as he bent to scoop up the remaining bags of coin from the gnome’s tavern haul “And should they find you here, they’ll not discover you with sign of your deeds, for I shall liberate you from such a burden. Fare thee well, young rogue, and better luck next time.”
(( Yeah I know, no character bio there, but I'm getting to it, honest ))
