"Perhaps now the time has come... the battle rages, endless, timeless. Neither bears enough strength to win decisively...
It is time."
Leaning forward, he reached into the image, black-gloved fingers glowing...
Damn, this is goin' nowhere fast.
Darting back and lowering her sword slightly, Jane stared over at Firebird. Neither of them had been able to press any major advantages thus far, and the fight had been going on for what seemed like hours.
What is it with this place? Maybe time is goin' screwy again.
Snapping her head up as Firebird pressed again, she easily deflected the blazing blade and threw a counterswing, forcing the Praetorian back. Stepping forward once more, she flung a few hard strokes, each one striking harmlessly on the blade as Firebird blocked.
Suddenly, a strong wind blew across the featureless space, a point above them twisting and blackening, the sound of thunder echoing endlessly overhead as the ground shook underneath them. Staggering but managing to remain upright, Jane launched herself at her alternate self, trying to take advantage of the distraction.
Firebird launched herself back and landed hard on the ground, as Jane's brilliant sword sliced into the realm itself! An agonisingly loud roar exploded from the tear as she pulled the blade back, the hole in space growing rapidly and beginning to pull at her....
Aw hell. No. No, not again!
Time, whether subjective or real, slowed to a crawl as Jane was lifted off her feet and pulled away, having just enough time before all went black to see a vaguely familiar place on the other side of the rift...

Sighing quietly to herself, Jane lay back on the function-over-comfort bed and stared at the featureless ceiling of the cell for a moment. The door was quickly opened, then slammed shut and locked again as the interrogator left once more. He had obtained few real answers. She knew that she didn't really have any to give him... they apparently didn't like that too much.
How did this happen? Why don't I remember any of it? I don't know...
I don't know...
Too many times she had said those three words, question after question triggering nothing but blankness inside her head. They were talking of lie detector tests and even truth serums now.
Let them come... I'd quite like to know myself.
Closing her eyes, her thoughts wandered to her allies. To Kat. So far, she had neither seen nor heard any sign of any of them.
I wonder if they know where I am... what happened... do they even care...?
Running her fingers through her strangely now-white hair, she paused for a moment, her fingers tracing the emblem on the tiara that was still there, apparently irremovable. The stiffs that put her in the cell hadn't liked that... all efforts to remove it had apparently failed, and they were accusing her of trickery in keeping it on.
Why would I want to keep it on? I don't even know what it is...
Rolling over onto her side and pulling the thin blanket up to cover as much as it could, she drifted into a light, restless sleep.

A somewhat scruffy, hastily-scanned copy of a fax is left near the edge of the meeting table in the base. Paperclipped to it are pages and pages of excruciatingly detailed physical data and blurred (it appears that the images were clear on the original document) pictures of various marks and physical features deemed important.
Clipped onto the front is a small scrap of paper, bearing writing in a flowing script.
"Thought you might appreciate being a little more up-to-date."
The scrap is unsigned.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ZIGGURSKY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY For internal use only PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL[/b] TO: Block Manager FROM: Block Warden SUBJECT: Inmate FD-S-044721 As requested, have been monitoring inmate Jane Sarah Williams more closely. Lie detector tests appear to prove inmate's assertion that the object affixed to her forehead is unknown to her. Inmate continues to deny any and all knowledge of the nature of the object or how it came to be affixed there. Inmate appears more alert and awake in past 48 hours, and physical strength and reaction times have improved dramatically, to dangerous levels. Inmate could be a severe danger in the event of an emergency. Recommended course of action is to increase suppressant dosages to maximum safe levels, and ensure that they are given regularly. If no effect shown after this, request that inmate be moved to maximum security area/solitary confinement. Detailed results of initial physical examination attached as requested. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A somewhat unexpected story appears on a small-time news site early in the morning, and quickly spreads...
LUMINOUS PHOENIX ESCAPES ZIG Suspected mass-murderer's cell found empty, guards baffled
Jane Williams, otherwise known as the Hero Luminous Phoenix, has apparently escaped from a high-security cell this morning. Guards found the cell empty on their morning rounds, and a thorough search of the prison revealed no sign of the renegade Peacebringer. Though she was arrested on December 12th, the city has yet to decide whether to press charges of murder, property destruction and disturbing the peace.
Ziggursky Correctional Facility staff have appealed to the City's Heroes for assistance in catching Miss Williams, who they describe as "a threat to the City and everyone in it."
Further reports will follow as the story develops.

Another day, another headline...
LUMINOUS PHOENIX INNOCENT?
This site has been informed, by an inside source who wished to remain anonymous, that another Peacebringer has stepped forward to confess to the murder of some 16 Hellions and Skulls on December 12th.
This Peacebringer, believed to be the formerly-unremarkable Blind Infinity, claims complete responsibility for the crimes, and further claims that Luminous Phoenix, otherwise known as Jane Williams and currently at large after escaping the Ziggursky Correctional Facility on December 27th, is entirely innocent of the charges levelled at her.
Blind Infinity (real name unknown) is currently being questioned by Zig staff over the confession. If she is found to have committed the crimes, it is expected that the charges against Miss Williams will be dropped, though she will have to answer to the City for her breakout, an act considered unbecoming of an long-serving Hero, expected to be a role-model for her less experienced peers.
Further reports will follow as the story develops.

As another day dawns, the plot thickens...
Two confessors to one crime?
This site has learned this morning that another Peacebringer has stepped forward to claim responsibility for the murder of 16 Skulls and Hellions on December 12th.
This interloper claims that since the only evidence that the city has is eyewitness, the charges against Miss Williams cannot stick, as one shape-shifted Kheldian looks entirely like any another at a distance.
Our inside source tells us that the city has actually acknowledged this fact and agreed not to press the charges for fear of a public backlash around wasting money on such a supposedly obviously flawed case.
However, City Hall remains officially quiet on the matter, and with Miss Williams still at large following her escape on the 27th, the mess seems unlikely to be resolved soon.
